Before Mary Baker Eddy became Mary Baker Eddy, she was a 19th century spiritual leader who taught the Science of Being and its healing explanation to students, explaining that God is divine Mind and Life; that there is no life in human minds, things, places, organizations, drugs; reality is Spirit and spirituality.
Mary wrote a book, Science and Health: First Edition, in which she wrote, “The mistake the disciples of Jesus made to found religious organizations and church rites, if indeed they did this, was one the Master did not make; but the mistake church members make to employ drugs to heal the sick, was not made by the students of Jesus.”
So, religious organizations are a mistake, unmade by Jesus?
Then, Mary Baker Eddy organized a church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist. That’s pretty funny.
Was her religious organization a mistake? Apparently yes, if her words mean what they say, but those words also say a lot more. The words recognize that human beings have needs and because there is no instant when we zap fully into spirituality, in the meantime, we eat, cloth ourselves, have jobs, take medicine, go shopping, go to church, study, pray, share information and discoveries.
The mistake is believing, or disbelieving, that church saves us.
I believe, Truth saves.
