Bible Instruction

To become more alive to God’s promises, here is a short Bible lesson on divine authority…

Matt. 8:5-13 (ESV*)

When [Jesus] had entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, appealing to him, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, suffering terribly.” And he said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I too am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith. 11 I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, 12 while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Matt. 10:1

And [Jesus] called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction.

John 16:13

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Christ Jesus was an excellent example. Like him, the healer should speak to disease as having authority over it, leaving Soul to prevail over the false evidences of the physical senses and to assert Spirit’s claims over mortality and disease. The same Principle cures both sin and sickness. When divine Science overcomes faith in a fleshly mind; and faith in God destroys all faith in temporal thinking and methods of healing, then sin, disease, and death will disappear.

If half the attention given to hygiene were given to the study of divine Science and to the spiritualization of thought, this alone would usher in the millennium. Skin exfoliates or scrubs used to remove unhealthy secretions or add a healthy look, receive a useful rebuke from Jesus’ precept, “Do not worry…about your body.”[1] We must beware of making clean merely the “outside of the cup and dish.”[2]

Think less of the human mind’s ongoing melodrama, and you will more quickly know your spiritual God-given dominion. You must understand your way out of human theories relating to health, or you will never believe that you are quite free from some affliction. Our harmony and spirituality will never be reached without the understanding that Mind is not in matter. Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony—God’s law. It is our moral right to nullify an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority.

Christ Jesus overruled the mistake which would impose penalties for transgressing physical laws of health. He annulled laws of physics which only have human approval for their validation. Laws of matter have no divine authority.

Turn away from that which falsely pressures us, with the enduring conviction that those pressures are illegitimate. God is no more the author of sickness than of sin. You have no law of God to support the necessity either of sin or sickness, but you have divine authority for denying that necessity and healing the sick.

There is divine authority for believing in the superiority of spiritual power over material resistance.

    Cheryl,

I would like to send you a comment on your book, Science and Health, which I think you might find helpful, or at least provocative, but don’t know where to send it. It doesn’t seem right to make the comment in this blog, but I could do so if you would like. I am a lifelong Christian Scientist. About 15 years ago, I thought about updating Science and Health, but after a couple of years, decided to update the KJV.as a first, less-controversial step. I am about ready to put my update of the KJV on line. I have a master’s degree in Bible Studies and have spent the last 20 years working intensely with the Bible.

      Hi Jon,
Thank you for commenting. I’m sure your updating work on the KJV has been rewarding.
As for updating Science and Health, the controversial aspect is not a guiding force, but only a servant. Controversy serves to expose self-delusional behavior, such as the behavior that leads to the belief of idolatry and the belief that the spirit can be contained in the letter. “All things work together for good.” (Romans 8:28)
The revision, “21st Century Science and Health,” is in obedience to the law of progress. There is no controversy in the demonstration of progress, but only love and goodness.
Controversy is only on the side of the few who insist on acting as though a set of human words is Christian Science. These controversial minds act as if Christian Science can be contained in a book, similar to trying to contain the law of gravity in a book.
Surely you know, the law of God is universal and accessible to everyone through spirit. I don’t recall Mary Baker Eddy acquiring a master’s degree, yet she demonstrated for us our right, and responsibility to advance the spirit of Christian Science, rather than flop around trying to push, or decipher, the letter.
God bless you and your work.
      Sincerely,
      Cheryl

        Cheryl,

Thank you for your gracious, wise response.

In going through all of your blogs over the years, I think that I have come to know you; and I have loved getting to know you.

I will just limit myself to saying that you have done a great service to the CS Movement by raising the subject of the need to update Science and Health.

The CS Movement seems to be joined at the hip with the 1769 edition of the King James Version. The Movement can’t continue to be viable in the U.S. unless it moves beyond a 1769 mind set. If the only thing that I accomplish is to get some in the Movement to start contemplating moving beyond the 1769 KJV, then I will be happy.

Best wishes for increased success with your efforts to get the Movement to accept a revision of Science and Health.

        Respectfully,

        Jon Larson
